Miss Desjardin through the years.

In Stephen King’s novel, Rita Desjardin is Carrie’s gym teacher and one of the few adults at school who recognizes that Carrie is being mistreated. After the infamous shower-room incident, she is furious with the other girls and forces them to confront the consequences of their actions. Unlike many of the adults around Carrie, Rita sees the bullying for what it is and tries to establish some form of accountability.

The 1976 film changes her name to Miss Collins, played by Betty Buckley, and turns her into one of the most memorable adult characters in the story. Her confrontation with Chris and the other girls after the shower incident establishes her as one of the few people willing to stand up for Carrie.

For Carrie (2002), the character returns as Miss Desjardin, played by Rena Sofer. This version stays closer to the character’s original name while retaining many of the qualities established by Betty Buckley’s portrayal. She is strict but protective of Carrie, particularly after witnessing the cruelty directed toward her.

For the 2013 remake Miss Desjardin is played by Judy Greer. This version is somewhat more sympathetic and emotionally grounded, with Greer emphasizing the teacher’s concern for Carrie rather than simply her authority as a disciplinarian.

Mike Flanagan’s Carrie (2026) introduces another version of the character, played by Amber Midthunder. Judging by the early looks, it seems like we’re going to see a different side of Miss Desjardin, including scenes with her peers and in classrooms outside of the gym classes.

Last Chance Motel (2026) Review 💒

I don’t think I’ve ever been this invested in the entire making of a movie as I have been with Last Chance Motel. Danielle Harris and Scout Taylor-Compton’s Talk Scary to Me Podcast has given me a front-row seat to the film’s evolution. Their podcast accompanied me through some particularly moments, and listening to their dynamic, their friendship, and their conversations about the industry and their personal lives also made me an even bigger fan of both actresses.

I have a long history with Danielle and Scout’s work. I’ve followed their careers for years, celebrated their new projects and every new step they’ve taken, and watched them establish themselves as two of the most recognizable figures in modern horror. They are scream queens, horror icons, and beloved figures within the fandom. So when listeners of Talk Scary to Me witnessed the genesis of Last Chance Motel back in 2024, it was impossible not to become invested.

What began with Scout sharing the real-life inspiration behind the story—her own search for a wedding venue—gradually evolved into something much bigger. Week after week, the podcast offered glimpses into the process: developing the story, writing, producing, scouting locations, filming, and eventually taking on virtually every role imaginable to bring their vision to life.

Now, after two years of anticipation and watching the film take shape almost in real time, the wait is finally over.

And honestly, all I can say is: THANK YOU!
